Newborn photography is an adorable way to get baby photos of your child within their first few weeks of life. These incredibly cute photos should be booked before the baby is born – otherwise the specific poses that come with newborn photography will not come for the baby. Here are some things to keep in mind when going about booking and going to a newborn photography session.
How old should the baby be?
Ideally, the age of the baby in a newborn photography shoot should be between 5 -12 days old. When babies are that young they spend a lot of their time sleeping, which makes a photo shoot easier to conduct. Babies this age also sleep in curled up poses very much like the positions they were in when they were still in the womb. After about 14 days, babies tend to have a growth spurt. This means they stretch out their arms and legs more and are not as bendy in terms of curling up sweetly for a picture. Having them curled up in that specific way is often needed for the use of certain props.
When should you book your session?
It really is best to book your photo session as early as possible – even as early as the second trimester of pregnancy. The window of time for newborn portraits is very slow, as was discussed earlier, so it is always best to book even 5 to 6 months out to make sure your photographer is available.
How long does the average photo session take?
Usually a newborn photoshoot can take from 2 to 3 hours, including the portraits of the baby on their own, with each parent, and then the whole family together. It may seem like a long time at first, but it is important to remember that half that amount of time is spent feeding the baby and making sure they’re comfortable and happy, so the portraits look the best they can.
